About this photo
Toto (b. 1975, Cameroon) lived in Spain as a circus animal at the small, ill-funded circus Orfeo. There he was part of a mini-zoo. In 2001 he was left at a local rescue centre, together with three other chimpanzees, because the circus couldn’t afford to keep them anymore. Since the rescue centre was forced to close down in 2009, Toto has been staying with AAP, first in Spain and now in the Netherlands.
Species: Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
This photo is part of the series Primates, a photographic story about monkeys and apes in rescue centres. From October 2nd till December 6th, 2020 this series was on show in the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
